The Story

I DIDN'T WANT TO WAIT ON ANYONE

In 2016 I was living in Downtown LA, deep into The Other Side of Paradise.

The project was crawling. My engineer was taking so long that I started to wonder whether the problem was me. Was I tripping, or was he actually moving that slow?

So I made a whole record to find out. Two weeks, start to finish, with a different engineer.

eLO was staying with me at the time. He would make beats in the living room and I would start freestyling over them. When one hit I would tell him I'm gonna need that. He'd send the stems, I'd go in the other room and record it.

That was the whole process. No sessions booked, no calendar, nobody to wait on. A beat in one room and a mic in the other.

LIFE IS ALL ABOUT LEVELS. THIS ONE WAS ME LEVELING UP AS A HUMAN BEING, AS A MAN, AND AS AN ARTIST.

The Growth is about how I grew up. The things that shaped me on the way from a boy to a man.

I kept my phone recording through those sessions. Most of my songs came out of freestyling in the moment the beat was being made, and leaving the phone running kept it honest. Larry Freestyle is one of those. Straight off the dome, and I still think it's one of the best things here.

What it cost was time and mixing fees. Tony Lopes mixed it.

It was the first time I felt comfortable as an artist being myself. I wasn't a naive kid repeating what I had been taught. I had lived some things by then, and they had taken my perspective somewhere else, and I wanted to document that stretch of the road while I was still walking it.

Ten years later that is still what it is. A record about levels, made by somebody who had just found one. A reminder that no matter how old you get, you can always grow.
