In The Other Side of Paradise, Tree struggles with what he believes after losing someone very close to him. He begins to feel lost under the harsh realities of life. He was raised to rely on God, but after his prayers seemingly go unanswered, he isn't sure what to do or what to believe.
Later, in his adult years, he returns home to a dark apartment after a long day of work. He notices a shadow that appears darker than the darkness itself. He immediately turns on the light, but there is nothing there.
He flicks it off again — and not only is the shadowy figure back, it's closer than before. Thinking "I know I must be trippin," he turns on the light again. Once again there is nothing visibly in front of him. But the light is not as bright anymore, and it appears to flicker.
As the hairs on his neck begin to rise, he reaches for the switch again, curious to see what happens when he turns the light back off. This time the figure is so close he jumps back in terror, hitting the switch as fast as humanly possible.
In disbelief, he reverts to something his mother once told him as a child. "Baby, if you're ever afraid or feel you're in the presence of an evil spirit, call on the name of Yahweh."
So as the light flickered dimly, he began to say it. "Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh, Yahweh — I know you hear me…"
