The Story

BELIEF ISN'T THE SAME AS KNOWING

Before we choose what to believe, someone else usually chooses for us.

I was raised with a name for God, a set of answers, and a particular way of seeing the world. For most of my life, I accepted those beliefs as truth because they were all I had ever known.

Then I began asking questions.

I started researching the name of God for myself, and at that point in my journey, the search led me to Yahweh. I did not know what finding that name would change. I only knew I could no longer accept every answer without examining it for myself.

At the same time, I was working so much that my life stopped feeling like mine. The days blended together. I moved between work and my apartment exhausted, disconnected from my creativity, and slowly forgetting why I had come to Los Angeles.

One night, I came home and felt something in the apartment with me. The room was quiet, but I did not feel alone. There was a dark presence in the corner that I could not explain.

In that moment, Yahweh was the name I called.

I repeated it until the dim lights flickered and became bright. Then the presence was gone.

THE MOMENT YOU BEGIN TO QUESTION EVERYTHING IS THE MOMENT EVERYTHING BEGINS TO CHANGE.

The name became a chant. The chant became the hook. The verse became the prayer I had that night, written exactly as I felt it, without trying to make the experience easier to explain.

When I left the religion I was raised in, people told me I had left God too. But what happened in that apartment made the truth feel more complicated than that. It left me wondering where inherited belief ends and a personal relationship with the divine begins.

You can accept what the people around you believe, or you can search for yourself. I searched. The deeper I went, the more I realized that truth does not always leave you with fewer questions. Sometimes it opens a door you cannot close again.

For years, I didn't know how to tell this story. Eventually, I realized that I did not need to explain everything. I only needed to show what the experience felt like.

I returned to the image of a boy standing in an endless field, reaching toward a hand descending from beyond the frame. The space between those hands holds the entire story. Distance. Doubt. The desire to know whether something is reaching back.

The song became a film. The image became garments.

Same hand. Same reach. More questions than answers.
